Spring Flowers In Texas

These flowers begin their blooming early in the year, and most of them will continue to show off their colors well until the frost. When you choose these for your flower bed, they’ll be the ones to welcome you back outside after the cold empty winters.

  • ‘Allyson’ Mexican Heather – Tiny pinkish-purple flowers cover this annual that blooms early and continues throughout the year. After mild winters, it might even reseed on its own and become a perennial. Bees and butterflies love it.
  • ‘Dakota Gold’ Helenium – Once considered a native wildflower, it is now a dependable staple in Texas flowerbeds. They require very little water and have strong root systems. Small yellow flowers appear in late spring and keep going until the frost. If you live far enough south or have a mild winter, they may reseed and return the following year.
  • ‘Laura Bush’ Petunia – Another reseeding annual, this variety of petunia begins blooming in the spring as well. It looks great in window boxes, containers, and hanging baskets.
  • ‘Tidal Wave Red Velour’ Petunia – This variety blooms best from spring to early summer, and its flowers are a deep rich red. While it is more heat tolerant than other petunias, once the summer heat hits you’ll either want to protect it somehow or replace it.
  • Portulaca grandiflora (“Rock Rose”) – Also known as “Moss Rose”, “Mexican Rose”, and several other names, portulaca forms a dense carpet of foliage covered in a wide range of colors (depending on which variety you choose). Its blooms begin in late spring, and it does great in hot, dry conditions.
  • ‘Blue Princess’ Verbena – A great low-maintenance perennial, it will give you mounds of small lavender-colored flowers guaranteed to attract bees and butterflies.

Summer Flowers in Texas

  • Angelonia, Summer Snapdragon – Angelonia is a heat-tolerant annual that is reliable in all parts of our state. It is useful as a border, ground cover, or in containers. You can find it in white as well as several shades of pink and purple.
  • ‘SunPatiens’ Impatiens – Trying to grow traditional shade-loving impatiens in Texas can be frustrating. However, this variety not only tolerates the heat and sun, it thrives in it! They come in a variety of colors and grow to 2-3 feet tall.
  • Blue Daze – A low-spreading annual that loves heat and sun. Small sky blue flowers show up in summer and last until frost. However, if you are in Zone 9 or above it can be a perennial.
  • Cape Plumbago – Another sky blue flower that does well in hot, humid summers, this one is a true perennial in Zone 8b and above that begins blooming in May.
  • ‘Flare’ Perennial Hibiscus – Get ready for 10-inch wide bright red flowers! If you have a site with poor soil, this one will handle it and reward you with tons of blooms.
  • ‘Tidal Wave Silver and Cherry’ Petunia – These varieties are more heat tolerant than other petunias and deliver profuse blooms all summer long.

Fall Flowers in Texas

  • Fall Zinnias – Check out ‘Profusion’ and ‘Zahara’ for zinnias that bloom from late summer to frost.
  • ‘Texas Maroon’ Bluebonnet – Considered a tough winter annual version of our state flower, this variety is a great selection for when other blooms begin to fade.
  • Cool Season Euphorbias – Several varieties of these flowers will dependably deliver beautiful blooms throughout the fall and winter months. Take a look at ‘Ascot Rainbow’, ‘Rudolph’, or ‘Glacier Blue.’
  • Mexican Bush Sage – This is a tough plant that will give you lots of great fall color. It’s a perennial below Zone 8, but may survive mild winters further north.

Flowering Plants in Texas

  • Knockout Rose – For a hard-to-kill shrub that will bloom nearly all year long, you can’t beat the Knockout Rose. They’re drought-tolerant, heat-resistant, and can withstand the diseases that make traditional roses so difficult to grow.
  • Grandma’s Yellow Rose – Rosa ‘Nacogdoches’ is a terrific choice to celebrate the “yellow rose of Texas” in your landscape. It will keep blooming from spring to fall, and even has a slight spicy fragrance.
  • Vitex – Also known as “Texas Lilac” or “Chaste Tree”, this plant can either be a shrub or small tree up to 15 feet tall and wide depending on how you let it grow. Thick purple blooms cover it from early summer through the fall.
