5 Spring Landscape Ideas to Improve Your HOA This Year

Homeowners association landscaping can be a challenge. It’s tough to get board members to agree on the best ways to spend money on landscaping.

However, there are ways to beautify your neighborhood without breaking the bank—and a lot of them can actually bring the neighborhood together! Here are 5 we think you and your HOA will love.

5 Spring Landscape Ideas Your HOA Will Love

  1. Spring Cleaning

What part of our lives doesn’t look better when we simply straighten things up a little?

Our first suggestion for your HOA landscaping is probably the easiest, but it’s often the most overlooked. Spring clean-up landscaping isn’t as exciting as installing new flower beds or other landscape design elements. However, it can be one of the best landscaping improvements you can do in an HOA community.

Many times your HOA board and committee members may have a hard time finding the funds for big outdoor projects, but cleaning up what you already have often costs nothing more than a little bit of time and energy.

Consider making it a neighborhood event by inviting residents to come together on a sunny day with their rakes, leaf blowers, and trash bags to tidy up your common areas. Don’t forget the benefits of adding fresh mulch too!

What if you ended the day by providing a bunch of free food and having a spring clean-up block party to celebrate everyone’s hard work? It would be a good investment that builds community and improves the looks of the neighborhood all at the same time!

     2. Trees and Shrubs

Warmer weather is on the way in a few weeks. Pretty soon, trees and shrubs all around your community will begin blooming/growing again, providing you with their shade and beauty.

Tree Maintenance

By then, though, it will be too late to successfully do any tree pruning. The best time to remove limbs that are either diseased, damaged, or in the way is while the trees are dormant. Once the temperatures warm up and the sap starts rising again, you could actually cause more damage than good by pruning at the wrong time!

Take a walk around your neighborhood now while it’s still chilly and take note of any trees in your HOA common areas that may need attention. If you or someone on your HOA landscape committee aren’t comfortable pruning those limbs yourself (see this post we did recently on 3 Tips For Good Tree Care), contact a licensed tree professional for help.

Planting New Trees and Shrubs

Once the soil warms up, it will be a perfect time to plant any new trees and shrubs that your HOA landscape committee wants to add around entrances, walking trails, and other common areas. Go ahead and plan whatever landscaping improvements you want to make so you can get those new plants in the ground and start enjoying them as soon as the weather is right!

Depending on the size of the project, this is another great opportunity to involve the entire neighborhood and truly create a community landscape. Anyone can grab a shovel and enjoy the sense of ownership that comes from being able to say, “I planted that!” for years to come. If you want to make sure everything is planted properly, why not consider asking a local landscape contractor or a Dallas-area Master Gardener to provide a few pointers?

     3. Garden Beds

One of the biggest trends of the last several years has been homeowners growing more and more food in raised garden beds right on their own property. It doesn’t take a lot of space to grow a lot of delicious fresh vegetables!

Your particular HOA regulations may prohibit individual homeowners from having garden beds (or they may just restrict them to out-of-sight areas like a backyard). But if they’re an option in your neighborhood, your HOA landscape committee might want to host a gardening clinic this spring to help people know how to successfully build and plant a garden bed of their own.

If you want to take the idea one step further, imagine creating several community garden beds in a common area of your neighborhood that residents can enjoy cultivating together. If individual lots in your community are too small, having space available elsewhere in the area might be a great attraction.

     4. Lawns

As the grassy areas in your neighborhood come back to life after being dormant all winter, you want to be sure that things like weeds and disease don’t show up too. Now is when you need to have a landscape contractor spray pre-emergent weed control throughout your property.

We have turf experts on our team who have a lot of experience with HOA landscaping and keeping lawns weed-free. Our landscape services will make sure your lawns look great this Spring!

     5. Common Areas

If your neighborhood doesn’t have areas specifically designed for residents to gather, you’re missing one of the best ways to set your HOA apart! Even if your community is made up of large estate-sized lots, having common areas where people can play, walk, swim, grill, or relax is a great idea. Here are a few good ideas for common areas that we’ve seen:

    • Walking Trail – As people make resolutions to be more active, building a safe, smooth, and well-lit walking path throughout your neighborhood will give them a great way to stay healthy right where they live. It also creates a sense of connectedness throughout your community, which leads to increased levels of safety and security as neighbors get to know each other and keep an eye on things as they walk.
    • Dog Park – They’re our best friends, but they enjoy having some time with their other dog friends once in a while. Why not fence in a nice area (somewhere along the walking trail?) and cover it with durable artificial grass for a place where dogs can enjoy some fun off-leash time?
    • Grill Station/Patio – Not everyone can have the largest fanciest outdoor kitchen in their backyard. But what if your HOA board could install a really nice one somewhere in the neighborhood that residents could reserve from time to time? You could go all out with a hardscape space that has plenty of comfortable seating, lights for evening cookouts, a top-notch grill, and maybe even a pizza oven that makes your residents say “I sure am glad I get to live here!”
